Document Summary

The authority: closeness and legitimacy of authority to participant. The closer the authority the more obedience happen: institutional authority. Victim: emotional distance of victim from participant. The closer the victim the less obedience happen: dehumanizing. The more dehumanized the victim is the more likely participants will obey. The less responsibility given to participant, the more obedience happen: entrapment/ gradual escalation. Given the right situation people will comply: many studies indicate the power of situation not necessarily the weakness of the individual. The person who brings light to the wrongness of obedience: ex: the soldiers of u. s. army in iraq (cid:1) (cid:1) When the prisoners heads got covered it created emotional distance: deindividuation. All about using an event to inspire an experiment. In the experiment, factors are controlled to see outcomes: this can answer the question specifically. But it is not used to take away any individuals personal responsibility for engaging in the behaviour.
