Definitions of politics imply that somebody must have power. Power- ability to get what you want, regardless of what others want. How much power you have is relative to how much power your neighbour has, how much power your competitor has. Canada has been trying to persuade people to stop smoking. Persuasion appeals to peoples rationality and emotions: coercion (force) Use or threat of force (threat of sanction/laws) Canada put laws on restaurants and bars that no smoking is allowed on patios/in restaurants or else you will get fined. Power being applied as force: authority (legitimacy + obligation) People do what they are supposed to do willingly.
