Voting is an expression of showing participation and belonging in a particular political community. Enfranchisement: right to vote (important because it tells us who is a member of a particular political community) *in federal elections, we elect mp"s (member of parliament). In provincial elections, we elect mpp"s (member of provincial parliament) We did not see a universal enfranchisement until the age 1918 (in 1867 confederation, usually males of british background and over aged 21 were allowed to vote) Mostly french and british occupied canada at the time of confederation and before immigration. Status indians and aboriginals did not have the right to vote until 1960. Before 1948, laws prevented japanese, chinese, and south asians the right to vote. 1955, all remaining voting restrictions for immigrants were dropped and allowed to vote.
