Document Summary

Pathophysiology processes related to the physiological changes to the vascular system associated with the ht, atherosclerosis and stroke. **see week 6 and 7 notes atherosclerosis and stroke. Headache, flushing, dizziness, reflex tachycardia, hypotension, pallor, collapse. Relaxes the smooth muscle cells of vein & artery walls. Particularly potent on large & small coronary arteries, causing redistribution of blood and o2 to previously ischemic myocardial tissue, reducing angina. Atpase, which makes more calcium available for contractile proteins = increased cardiac output, increased force of contraction, decreased hr, decreased av conduction speed. Assess tolerance related to long term use. Symptoms (headache, lightheadedness, decreased bp) that may indicate a need for lower dose. Take apical pulse for 1 min before giving if <60 in adult or <90 in infant then take again in 1 hr. Assess i&o ratio, weight, turgor, lung sounds, edema, and if product levels are therapeutic. High doses can lead to plaque regression.
