Compassion: a deep awareness of the suffering of another couples with the wish to relieve it. Involves noticing another person"s vulnerability, experiencing an emotional reaction to this and acting in some way with them, in a way that is meaningful for people. Study aim to understand how patients experience compassion within nursing care and explore their perceptions of developing compassionate nurses. Methods/design: qualitative exploratory descriptive study using semi-structured interviews, 10 inpatients from six acute medical units, 4-10 days in hospital (one was 8 weeks, aged 18-91. Results - how would i feel in their shoes: an empathetic element to compassion, deep awareness of suffering and wish to relieve it is common. Results - being more compassionate: the essence of nursing and communication: some felt that it was a quality that brought individuals into nursing and could not be changed, cannot be taught/ can be taught.
