Document Summary

Of all canadians, 20% personally experience a diagnosed mental illness during their lifetime and one per three are expected to experience a mental health problem at some point in their life. A variety of factors influence a person"s mental health: internal, emotional problems, person"s social network, employment, education and housing. Mental health is the capacity to feel, think, express emotions, and behave in ways that enhance personal capacity to manage challenges, adapt successfully to a range of demands, and enjoy life. A relative and ongoing state of well-being in which individuals realize their abilities, cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively, and contribute meaningfully to the community. A major detriment for persons with a mental illness is stigma and its associated cycle of alienation and discrimination, which affect the abilities to seek and obtain help and support in the community.
