Task (constructive) conflict (tc) is a type of conflict in which people focus their discussion around the issue while showing respect for people with other points of views. People try to understand logic/assumptions of each position. This type of conflict tends to produce the beneficial outcomes of conflict. Relationship conflict (rc) is a type of conflict in which people focus on personal characteristics (not issues) as the source of conflict. People try to undermine each others worth/competence. This type of conflict tends to produce the negative outcomes of conflict. The goal is to encourage task conflict and minimize relationship conflict. The problem is that relationship conflict often develops when engaging in task conflict. The conflict model begins with the sources of conflict. Incompatible goals o(cid:374)e party(cid:859)s goals perceived to interfere with others goals. Interdependence conflict increases with interdependence as parties are more likely to interfere with each other.
