Ethics: the critical, structured examination of how individuals and institution should behave when their actions affect others. Critical about more than just describing existent patterns of behavior: figuring out which rules make sense. Figuring out the right thing to do is usually easy you were raised well and so you do the right thing most of the time. Knowing what"s right is harder then important ethical values or principles conflict. When we give reasons principles and values. Values: something good that we ought to promote. Principle: a rule usually grounded in a value, that tells you what you should do. Ex. you should do what you can to fight for injustice. Ex. you should stand up for what you believe in. Consequences: should promote good consequences and avoid bad ones, for all concerned in the long run. Fairness/justice: should make sure that good and bad consequences are distributed fairly: ex. pay our debts or treat like cases alike.
