Document Summary

Flexography: a modern relief printing process, printing using a flexible plate and liquid pourable inks. Commonly used for web printing on a wide variety of substrates (films, foils, bags, napkins) or sheetfed corrugated. Often has in-line converting (die-cutting, envelope making) Use of spot colours (versus process) is common. Sometimes 1-2 flexo coating units are installed at the delivery end of an offset process. High-end graphic printing at high-end speeds at low costs. Flexographic presses are webfed /use synthetic material. Each colour needs its own printing unit/cylinder. Flexo plates are made using a photosensitive polymer, which hardens when exposed to uv light. Image areas are exposed to uv light, hardening the polymer, where non-image areas will be removed during processing: back exposure, contact or negative film, ctp laser ablation, surface exposure, washout, drying, post-exposure, light finishing. May be water-based, solvent-based, or uv curved. Mounting tape: cushioned double-sided tape used to mount plates to plate cylinders.
