Funny is subjective physical comedy travels well internationally verbal/cultural humour is harder ex i love lucy vs. codco. Reversal of expectations makes things funny poor people invade world of rich; fish out of water. Types of comedy sketch, variety, standups sitcoms: multicam or single cam (the latter sometimes just called comedies ) dramedies comic relief in dramas (ex spock in star trek) = comedy comes from characters and the situations they find themselves in (usually embarrassing) Traditional storytelling techniques one story/ep beginning middle end conflict is resolved at end. Standalone eps vs story arcs (ex ross and rachel) But many shows hit reset, characters never change ex. 2 they learn the lesson at the end of the episode next week, it"s completely forgotten. Recurring characters but so short there"s less character depth, less plot.
