Tragedy + time = comedy steve allen, 1957. Highbrow = verbal, more character based, some knowledge of topical events and culture. Poor people invade world of rich, or vice-versa. Situation comedies (also, known as sitcoms but not always) Comic relief = funny bit in drama to relieve tension. E. g. , star trek: tos ~ laugh at kooky spock & kirk. Comedy flows from the situation the characters find themselves in. Beginning middle end conflict resolves by the end of the episode. Story arcs may stretch over a number of episodes. From letch, to sensitive man in just 11 years. But many shows hit reset button & characters never change. A problem at the beginning of the episode. Homer learns his lesson & does the right thing. May include recurring characters in a recurring setting for certain skits, but . The big difference is often whether they are shot single camera or multicamera.
