BLG 700 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Stratum Corneum, Stratum Spinosum, Stratum Basale
Document Summary
Integumentary system (fig 4. 1, 4. 2) = skin and accessory structures (hair, glands, nails) Contains all four tissue types; an epithelium covers its surface and underlying connective tissues provide strength and resiliency. Protection against: abrasion, ultraviolet light exposure, dehydration, entry of microorganisms. Sensation specialized sensory receptors detect temperature, pain, touch, pressure, proprioception (awareness of body position) Temperature regulation - via changes in skin blood flow and sweat gland activity. Defence contains cells of immune system. Excretion removal of small amounts of waste products. Skin (cutaneous membrane: epidermis and dermis. Cutaneous membrane / skin which has two major tissues layers: epidermis = superficial epithelium, dermis (papillary & reticular layer) = underlying connective tissue. Accessory structures located in dermis and protrude through epidermis to surface. Overlies the subcutaneous layer: hypodermis (superficial fascia) = loose connective tissue of the subcutaneous layer that is deep to the dermis and separates the integument from the deep fascia around other organs.
