If a word is pejorative it is a bad thing. If a word is ameliorative it is a good thing. Euphemisms used to make words sound better than they are (synonyms) Any taboo topic will be glossed over by a euphemism. Dysphemisms mockeries of a word making it worse. Narrowing: eg. sell give give in exchange for money. Has gone from more general to more particular. Has gone from more particular to more general. Never eat more than you can lift - miss piggy. Don"t bite off more than you can chew . Anaphora (the dog, it, we)--> we don"t repeat people"s names in stories. Speech act theory introduces the sense of using words to get things done. Speech act: an utterance used to accomplish an intended purpose either directly or indirectly you want to help me with the firewood .
