Document Summary
Week 5, lecture 7 and 8: knowledge and representation. Representation is the production of meaning of the concepts in our mind through language (hall) . Representation allows us to refer to the real and imaginary worlds. Involves the use of language, signs and images to connect meaning and language to culture and to stand for and represent things. We have to be able to communicate meaning. How we connect it to culture, our shared world. Decode visual perception in terms of an image in our head --> Convey your mental representation to others via the word for it. Think about the process: recognize --> decode--> convey. Automatic or seamless, but a complex process of how we make meaning in the world. Involve two processes: (1) classifying system and (2) language. Our brains use different means to make sense of the world. Mental map/system is shared by members of same/similar culture.
