Afferent nerves carry sensory info into the cns from the pns (approach) Efferent nerves carry info from the cns to motor outputs (escape: autonomic system interacts with the internal environment within the body. Responsible for essentially automatic processes, like breathing, heart rate & digestion. Has 2 kinds of efferent nerves (sympathetic & parasympathetic) as well as afferent nerves. Sympathetic division prepares the body to expend energy in response to some stimulus or stressful event. Stimulate, organize, & mobilize energy resources in threatening situations. Parasympathetic division restores & conserves energy. Difference between cells in somatic system & autonomic system: somatic.
