Document Summary
Motivation: the desires, needs and interests that arouse and activate an organism to move toward a specific goal. Motivational state or drive reversible internal conditions that affect the nature, strength and persistence of behaviour. Regulatory drives: maintain physiological homeostasis (internal stability); they regulate. " they are needed for immediate survival, direct evolutionary purpose. Examples include hunger and thirst, related to specific areas of the hypothalamus. Non-regulatory drives: serve a purpose other than maintaining homeostasis; they do not regulate. Safety (drives such as sleep and fear that motivate us to replenish our bodies and avoid danger) Reproductive (sexual, maternal, and sexual jealousy drives that motivate us to reproduce, care for our young, and guard our mates) Social (approval and acceptance drives that motivate us to cooperate) Educative (play and exploration, which motivate us to practice our skills and learn about our environments) Motivational states are rewarding: reinforced by the pleasure experienced once the reward has been obtained.
