Document Summary

Consciousness is the awareness of subjective experience. Dualism: consciousness existing as a substance different from physical matter: ren descartes supported this theory stating consciousness does not have physical properties we ascribe to physical matter (space, weight, etc. ) Dualism can never be supported or disconfirmed as it cannot be tested. Materialism: matter is the only substance in the universe and consciousness is a physical phenomenon. A person is conscious when he/she is able to report his/her own mental state. Testing consciousness includes the ability to remember a stimulus long enough to report on it. Perceptual representations and memories compete for representations in the global workspace: the winning information is accessible by processing attention, memory, high-level decision making, and verbal report. Neural correlates: minimal neuronal mechanisms required for specific conscious precept: this research studies how areas of the brain are involved in producing certain conscious experience.
