Physicalism: the view that everything that exists is no more extensive than its physical properties. Monism: the view that only one kind of substance exists. A specific definition of a phenomenon that allows us to generate testable. If our definition of consciousness is having subjective experiences then it is very difficult to propose a testable research question. We can only measure observable, physical events, so it is important to have a definition of consciousness that allows us to specify what objectively observable events we could see if someone or something is conscious.
