PHGY 214 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Skeletal Muscle, Glycogen, Catabolism
Document Summary
All chem rxs that occur w/n cells of the body. Includes rxs involving degradation, synthesis, and transformation of proteins, carbs and fats. Buildup or synthesis of larger organic macromolecules from small organic subunits. Rxs result in materials needed by the cell, storage of excess ingested nutrients not immediately needed for e prod or cellular building blocks. Breakdown or degradation of large, e rich organic molecules w/n cells. Two levels of breakdown: hydrolysis of large small molecules (no atp prod, oxidation of smaller subunits to yield e for atp prod. Nutrient molecules are broken down trhu digestion into smaller absorbable molecules. Dietary fats (triglycerides) monoglycerides and free fatty acids. 1st step of breaking down glycogen (glycolysis) interconversions among organic molecules. Aa building blocks for muscle protein: excess converted to glucose and fatty acids. Fatty acids become incorp into triglycerides postabsorbant=2-3hrs after consumption. Primary role in maintaining blood glucose levels. Principal site for metabolic interconversions like gluconeogenesis.
