Tuckman s traditional model of group development: forming, storming, norming, performing, adjourning. Despite the goal of being a good" team player, people differ in their preferences for behaviour. Many others!: diversity (all types) can be an asset because of the value of different perspectives, yet it tends to produce lower satisfaction and higher turnover. The challenge is how to actually attain the benefits of diversity while avoiding the pitfalls. To capitalize on diversity, you need to first recognize differences and understand their meaning: self-awareness will help you recognize your own tendencies, what you bring to the team, and why you react in positive/negative ways to some teammates. Many develop within first few minutes of team"s first meeting. Individuals who are most disruptive or least self-conscious may set unfavorable norms. Norms may be in conflict with one another. Contractor actions that structure the task-oriented behaviours of other team members (e. g. , suggesting task allocations, deadlines, task sequencing, goal monitoring)
