Far from rome, but moved there when started. Love of nature visible in two other poems written by him: eclogues, georgics, more focused on nature and relationship of human beings to nature. Became one of poets supported by emperor augustus, in aenid, a lot of references to augustan propaganda. Aenid is an epic poem, a reference to aeneas and illiad with id at the end, poem of aeneas. Augustus as funder and supporter of virgil: homer vs. virgil, iliad and odyssey vs. aeneid. Aeneid in 12 books: (iliad and odyssey longer, 24 books each: when virgil died in 19 bce, was still working on it. Greece, asked it to be burned, didn"t want to publish his un finished poem. But augustus did it anyway: it is primarily a work of fiction, but it contains also references to historical people and events, the first 6 books narrates the wandering of aeneas after the fall of troy.
