Aeneas leaves troy with anchises, iulus, and the trojan penates. Wanders around the mediterranean looking for a home. Attestation of him settling in italy as early as 500 bce. Romans thought either he or iulus founded alba longa, rome"s parent city. The first half modelled on the odyssey; the second in the iliad. Aeneas sets off to found a new troy: hounded by juno parallel to poseidon in the odyssey, settles in crete for a year, driven to italy by signs. Juno arranges to have cupid (eros) make dido fall in love with aeneas. Aeneas and his men are shipwrecked off carthage. Taken in by queen dido and her sister anna. Dido tries to make aeneas her husband and king. Mercury reminds aeneas that he has to go to italy. Dido cruses aeneas and his descendants that they should always be the enemies of. Carthage: structurally parallel to the polyphemus cursing odysseus in the odyssey.
