The high renaissance was not a period of stability: a period of radical change and instability. Michelangelo: over half a century after savonarola had been executed as a heretic, michelangelo claimed that he could still hear the preacher"s voice. The commission was for a subject that was not particularly popular in italian art before this period: after michelangelo"s statue, we begin to see the subject of the pieta much more commonly. This was used in french art, therefore it makes sense that a french cardinal wanted this subject matter. This was created between 1497 and 1500, meaning that michelangelo was working on this subject with savonarola was excommunicated and executed. This is a reduced version of the larger scene of the lamentation. The lamentation was a popular subject within italian art.
