Savonarola: savonarola was a florentine preacher, savonarola was a critic of the age, had a profound effect on michelangelo. There are records of a child cupid sculpture that michelangelo creates. It was sold as an antique, since it looked so classical: michelangelo was ripped off and given little money for this. This suggests how michelangelo was competing with antiquity from the beginning: cardinal riario had purchased the cupid sculpture, and must have been impressed, because he commissioned the bacchus. It entered the collection of one of riario"s friends.
