Descent of
testes
Inta ab near kidney, translocated inferiorly and anteriorly to the ab wall,
gubernaculum testis, move thru ab wall and take w them a pocket of peritoneal
cavity, ductus deferens, blood vessels, nerves and lymphatics in 3rd trimester
3 months= scrotal swelling, 7= inguinal canal formed, hormones det further
descent, birth= full descent
Spermatic cord
Fascia, CT and muscle wrap blood vessels, nerves and lymphatics that supply testes
Pampiform plexus: veins around testicles (insulate) cools down blood
Starts at deep inguinal ring, extends thru inguinal canal (other organs can descend
here too) and comes thru inguinal ring into scrotum
Scrotum
Sac of skin and fascia outside ab cavity, midline septum divides it into two
compartments, keeps testes 2C lower than body temp so spermatogenesis can
occur
Dartos muscle: smooth muscle, in skin of scrotum= wrinkled appearance
Cremaster (suspender) muscle: skeletal, deep in scrotal wall, controls position of
scrotum + testes
Testes
Hanging to attract females, 4-5 cm long and 2.5-3 cm in D, in scrotum near
spermatic cord
Tunica vaginalis: extension of peritoneum, covers lateral and anterior surface of
testes
Tunica albuginea: fibrous coat/capsule, extensions penetrate testes dividing it into
aprox 250-300 compartments called testicular lobules
Testicular lobules: contain seminiferous tubules, loose CT and lots of blood vessels
Seminiferous tubules: 80 cm long sperm factory 400 mill/day
Basal compartment: spermatogonia stem cells
Luminal comp: fully formed sperm, head down in cytoplasm epidydmis to
become mobile decapcitation in females activates them
Cells: Leydig/ interstitial cells w granular cytoplasm in loose CT b/n seminiferous
tubules and prod testosterone
