Document Summary
Male reproductive system: lecture 1 (reading material: chapter 27 pages 716-723) Primary sex organ: gametes = sperm, sex hormone = testosterone: testes (seminiferous tubules, sertoli and leydig cells, spermatogenesis & spermiogenesis) External genitalia: scrotum: protects testes, penis: organ of copulation. Genital ducts: store and transport system: epididymis, ductus deferens (vas, spermatic cord, urethra. Genital glands: secretes substances that nourish the sperm: seminal vesicles, prostate gland, bulbourethral glands. Cryptorchidism: absence of one or both testes from the scrotum. Pampiniform plexus: vein network, allows vascular heat exchange. Optimum temperature for sperm development = 2 c below body temp (35) Controlled by muscles: dartos (means skinned) muscle: smooth muscle. Tonic contractions give the scrotum its wrinkled appearance. When fibers are relaxed, scrotum is smooth: located in the skin of the scrotum, cremaster (the suspender) muscle: consists of skeletal muscle fibers and controls the position of the scrotum and testes, deep in scrotal wall.
