Bladder
collapsible, muscular sac functions in
temporary storage of urine (1L)
Location= behind pubic symphysis and
in front of rectum in males, under
uterus and in front of vagina in females
As it fills rugae disappear and dome
flat epithelium
Trigone: 3 openings (2 ureter, 1
urethra) creates a smooth funnel that
directs urine into urethra when bladder
contracts, common bacteria location
Internal urethral sphincter: smooth
muscle, provides invol control of
release of urine
3 layers:
1. Mucosa: trans epithelium on
lamina propria
2. Muscularis: thick 3 layers of
smooth muscle (inner
longitudinal, middle circular,
outer longitudinal)= detrusor
muscle
3. Adventitia: fibrous CT except
superior bladder which is
covered w peritoneum
(serousa)
Urethra
Thin walled muscular tube, pass thru
urogenital diaphragm forming circular
band= external urethral sphincter
20 cm in males w 3 regions, all w
lamina propria and muscularis
1. Prostatic urethra: 2.5cm passes
thru prostate gland,
transitional strat columnar +
little pseudo columnar
2. Membranous urethra: 2cm
extends from prostate to
beginning of penis, pseudo/
normal strat columnar (skeletal
muscle in muscularis)
3. Penile urethra: 15cm, extends
from urogenital diaphragm
(skeletal) to external urethral

Transitional at bladder strat squamous w lamina propria and muscular (smooth w skeletal muscle at pelvic floor) After 200-300 ml of urine stretch rs stim reflex arc.
