Further Instructions (please read and follow):
1. Submit your reading notes before each Wednesday class; that is, before 10 am. A drop box will
be opened on Canvas.
2. Prepare notes for the Friday class. You do not need to submit them online, but you will need
them for your research essay, and to discuss the readings in small group discussions.
3. You many use one reading template for each set of readings assigned. Distinguish clearly
between each reading in your notes. Enter text on your laptop/I-pad when taking notes to
create a searchable data base. Add additional notes during class.
4. You do not need to bring a paper copy of your notes to class. Do bring your laptop, however.
5. This is a WORD document. Use as much space as you need to answer each question.
6. Please write in complete sentences.
7. Include page numbers. Make sure to paraphrase correctly, and to indicate where you are
quoting. Avoid plagiarizing. You are creating these notes for your research essay.
8. Read/review chapter 2, “Working with Sources” in Mary Lynn Rampolla, A Pocket Guide to
Writing in History. Note in particular section 2b, “Evaluating Sources,” with particular attention
to 2b-1, “Questions for Evaluating Text-Based Primary Sources,” and 2b-2, “Questions for
Evaluating Secondary Sources,” from which the questions below are borrowed and/or adapted.1
a. In addition, in chapter 5, read/review 5a-2, “Focusing on a research question,” 5c,
“Conducting research,” and especially 5d, “Taking effective research notes.”
b. In chapter 3, read/review section 3a “Reading actively in history,” with special attention
to “Determine the author’s thesis” and “Writing as you read.”
