SOCL 3601 Chapter : Syllabus011112
Document Summary
Social interaction: sociology of friendship, status, and social pressure. Class meets: tth 140-3 in 211 tureaud hall. Course description: this course is called social interaction, but has a special focus on a particular type of small group interaction: friendship. We will study friendships between individuals and relationships, applying social psychological theories of interaction and group processes. We will also examine the effects of hierarchies of status and power and of norms and social pressure on friendships and intimate relationships. While we will study friendships at all ages and in many different settings, this course has a special emphasis on friendship in childhood and adolescence and in school settings. This is the time and place when most of us learn the rules and patterns of interaction among friends, so it is a natural starting point for studying friendship. We will also focus on intimate relationships in adolescence and adulthood.
