Deviance: behavior that is recognized as violaing expected rules and norms. Crime: violaion of norms that have been writen into law. Five speciic characterisics that sociologists understand about deviance: it is linked to ime, it is linked to cultural values, it is a cultural universal, it is a social construct, it is related to social power. Uniform crime reporing survey: measures crime by using police staisics of reported crimes. General social survey vicimizaion: measures crime vicimizaion based on a representaive sample of ~20,000 canadians aged 15 years and older. Crime rate: volume of crime reported to the police. Crime severity index (csi): measures the seriousness of crime reported to police. Gender: criminal ofenders are more likely to be male, the rate of female criminality has increased substanially since the 1960"s. Ethnicity: aboriginal peoples are over-represented in canada"s correcional faciliies: racial proiling: police pracice of targeing criminals based on their race and ethnicity.
