Social constructionism: that gender is thought
Gender refers to the designation of feminine and masculine, as seen
from a socio-cultural standpoint. Refers to actual expected thought
sfeelting and behavior associated with masculinity and femininity
Gender is not
1 a natural, pre-given phenomenon
2. biologically determined
3. universal, timeless or ahistorical
4. an individual construction
homophobia: is a negative attitude toward homosexuals and
homosexuality
stereotypes: simplified perceptions people have of an entire group, are
structured set of beliefs about the personal attributes of women and
men
intersexed: refers to a person whose body has both male and female
characteristics
transsexual: a person who has had surgical modifications and hormonal
treatment to become the other sex
transgender: a person whose gender identity is different from their
biological sex
Gender identity is not the same thing as sexual orientation, which
refers to a person’s preference for sexual partners
Sex and gender are two elements of sexual identity – the third is sexual
orientation
Heterosexual: people who are sexually attracted to people of the
opposite sex
Homosexual: people who are sexually attracted to people of the same
sex
Bisexual: people who are sexually attracted to people of either sex
Asexual: described people who are not sexually attracted to people of
either sex.
