May start with a small discharge of bloody mucus. The membranes containing the amniotic fluid may rupture (this is referred to as the water breaking) Early first stage labour: contractions are far apart (15-20 mins, cervix is continuing to efface and dilate. Late first stage labour: marked by dilation of cervix 5-8 cm, effacement continues, shorter than the early first stage. Transition: short but difficult phase, cervix dilates from 8 to 10 cm (fully dilated) and become fully effaced, contractions are very strong and regular, pain and exhaustion may result, woman is now ready for stage 2. Together the first stage labour can last anywhere from 2-24 hours: averages 12-15 hours for first pregnancy; 8 hours for second + If healthy pregnancy, usually advised to go to the hospital when contractions are 4-5 mins apart.
