Puberty= the time during which there is sudden enlargement and maturation of the gonads, other genitalia, and secondary sex characteristics so that the individual becomes capable of reproduction. Besides the prenatal period, puberty is yet another stage where further sexual differentiation takes place. Marked increase in sex hormones: controlled by hypothalamus, pituitary and gonads. Differs between the sexes: girls: 8-12, boys: 10-14, girls grow until about 16 and boys until about 18. The timeline for puberty are variable from one person to the next. Adolescence is a socially defined period of development: psychological transition from behaviour and attitudes of a child to that of an adult, long period in canada age 10-~20. Increase in lh at beginning of puberty- stimulates the testes to produce testosterone. During this time, erections may increase in frequency: by 13-14 ejaculation is possible, by 15 the ejaculate contains sperm.
