Document Summary
Hyperpolarization stimulus: is a change in the cell"s membrane potential that makes it more negative. It inhibits action potentials by increasing the stimulus required to move the membrane potential to the action potential threshold. Local or graded response: as the potential spreads across the membrane, it diminishes as it moves away from the point of stimulation. The greater the stimulus the greater the response this means the change in potential is called a graded response. As the potential spreads across the membrane it diminishes as it moves away from the point of stimulation. A hyperpolarization or depolarization event may simply produce a graded potential which is a small change in the membrane potential. A graded potential comes in all sizes (not just one size). So fro example if just a couple channels open because of a small stimulus the graded potential may be small but if more channels open because of a larger stimulus than it may be bigger.
