Document Summary

Greek hippocrates and galen humoral theory of illness imbalance of blood, black and yellow bile and phlegm illness caused by evil spirits: disease related to bodily factors but can also impact the mind. Mysticism and demonology dominated the concepts of disease. These were religiously based rather than scientifically based. These approaches to the mind-body were less accepted with understanding of cellular pathology. Anton van leeuwenhock"s (1632 : work in microscopy and giovanni morgagni"s (1682 1771) work in autopsy both contributed to the rejection of the humoral theory of illness. The mind and body became separated with advances in medicine. Physicians dealt with the body while philosophers and theologians dealt with the mind. This dualistic approach, and reliance on physical evidence became the only basis for diagnosis and treatment. This biomedical model of health and illness continued for nearly 300 years. The mind-body view began to change with sigmund freud"s work on conversion hysteria.
