Relying on their own self reports: surveys have a target group or population in mind. They want to extrapolate results to that population. Population is a group of individuals who have a common interest. Not always the entire world: questioning entire population is unfeasible so a representative sample is used . Similar to entire population in all aspects: random sampling: equal chance of being chose, caution: sample may be biased (not representative, famous error: dewey defeats truman . Newspaper article saying dewey defeats truman, made a speculation by calling people but not everyone had a phone. Dewey was a republican who were more wealthy and therefore had more phones. Biased because not everyone had telephones so not everyone had an equal chance to be asked: disadvantages: People say what they think you want to hear. Subtle changes in the wording may have drastic effects. Could be a population if you are just interested in albino rats.
