Cancer of the larynx: cancer of the larynx is a malignant tumour in and around the larynx (voice box, almost all malignant tumours of the larynx arise from the surface epithelium and are classified as squamous cell carcinoma. This is the most common form of laryngeal cancer (95% of cases) Incidence of distant metastasis with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (including larynx cancer) is relatively low. Adenocarcinoma or sarcoma of the larynx is diagnosed less often: the life-time survival rate for patients who have small laryngeal cancers without evidence of spread to the lymph nodes is about 75-95% Recurrence occurs usually within the first 2-3 years after diagnosis: carcinogens that have been associated with laryngeal cancer include: Risk factors: tobacco (including second hand smoke) and alcohol consumption are the greatest risk factors for cancer of the larynx, other risk factors include: Age (higher incidence after 60 years of age) Nutritional deficiencies (riboflavin, or vitamin b2, deficiency)
