In long term care facilities- pneumonia, gi, eye, skin, uti. 1 billion usd per year for ssis alone. Money could be used to care for another patient if first didn"t get infection. Virus enters body and moves to host cell. Virus enters host cells and uses host"s ribosomes to replicate, damaging/altering host cells. Viruses released from host cell and move in tissue or blood to new cells to infect. Bacteria enter tissue and replicate, damaging host cells. Immune response pgs synthesized from damaged cm and attract. Colonization- microorganism grows and multiples without tissue changes. Normal (resident) flora- multiple species of bacteria live on body surfaces but no physical reaction to them, enmeshed. Take up space so other bacteria can"t. Help with some processes (e. g. producing vit b) Can cause infection if go elsewhere (e. g. from gut to bladder)
