The history of canadian law begins before the history of canada. William the conqueror) and with the developments under the reign of. William i and henry ii ruled as monarchs in a feudal system of government. This is a system of government where the executive, legislative and judicial functions are all, in theory, combined in one person the monarch who is the lawmaker, implementer of decisions, and the final court of appeal. If ordinary people had a dispute, they took it to their local lord. If the lord had a dispute, or the people were unsatisfied with their lord"s justice, they took it to the king. By the time of henry ii (1153-1189), so many people were so dissatisfied with local courts that the king"s courts were becoming overburdened. Henry appointed judges who traveled throughout particular areas of the country (circuit courts), administering justice on behalf of the king.
