Images are any pictorial representation, regardless of what wavelengths or remote sensing device was used to detect and record the electromagnetic energy. A photograph refers specifically to images that have been detected as well as recorded on photographic film. Cameras and their use for aerial photography are the simplest and oldest of sensors used for remote sensing of the earths surface. Cameras are framing systems which acquire a near-instantaneous snapshot of an area of the surface. They are passive optical sensors that use a lens to form an image at the focal plane where an image is sharply defined. Photographic films are sensitive to light from 0. 3 nm to 0. 9 nm in wavelength covering the uv, visible and near-infrared. Panchromatic film are sensitive to the uv and visible.
