Cameras and their use for aerial photography are the simplest and oldest of sensors used for remote sensing of the earths surface. Cameras are framing systems which acquire a near-instantaneous snapshot of an area of the surface. They are passive optical sensors that use a lens to form an image at the focal plane where an image is sharply defined. Photographic films are sensitive to light from 0. 3 nm to 0. 9 nm in wavelength covering the uv, visible and near-infrared. Panchromatic film are sensitive to the uv and visible.
