FOLK 1000 Lecture 10: Chapter 3 The Interview
Document Summary
A few years ago a new brand of digital recorder was adopted by several faculty members of the folklore department. The recorder may represent a stress point for some fieldworkers. If you are not used to operating a recorder, it can be a worry and a distraction during the interview. If this is one of the first interviews you"ve done, try to get as good quality as you can but don"t be disappointed if you don"t produce a tape of broadcast quality. Like nearly everything, it takes practice: watch obvious things like not drumming your fingers on the table top where the recorder is sitting, but over all just try to concentrate on relaxing during your first few interviews. A last suggestion would be to always have batteries on hand because sometimes it is difficult to plug the machine in. Interviews usually work out well in the end, but you have to be ready for surprises.
