Document Summary

Groups exert influence on the attitudes and behaviours of their individual members to a large extent: because people are highly dependent on others in social settings, this dependence sets the stage for influence to occur. We are frequently dependent on others for information about the adequacy and appropriateness of our behaviour, thoughts, and feelings. Information dependence: an individual"s reliance on others for information about how to think, feel, and act, this allows others to influence our thoughts, feelings, and actions via the signals they send to us. The process through which this occurs is explained by social information processing theory. Information from others is used to interpret events and develop expectations about appropriate and acceptable attitudes and behaviours. Individuals are often motivated to compare their own thoughts, feelings, and actions with those of others as a means of acquiring information about their adequacy.
