BIOL 3530 Lecture 11: Chapter 9
Document Summary
Organogenesis is concerned with the development of specific organs and structures and is critical in the development of an organism. The development of organs provide models systems to study developmental processes such as pattern formation, positional information specification, induction, morphogenesis and cellular differentiation. The cellular mechanism are very similar to those observed in earlier development but are employed in a different temporal and spatial patterns. For example, the development of vertebrate and drosophila limbs are very similar and share many of the same genes (especially those of signaling molecules. ) The vertebrate limb develops from a limb bud. The early limb bud has a core of mesenchymal mesoderm and an epithelial ectodermal layer. Most of limb develop from the mesenchymal core but the muscle cells migrate into the bud from the somites. The progress zone is at the tip of the bud and is composed of rapidly dividing and proliferating undifferentiated cells.
