Document Summary

The study of dna and genes and their transmission from one generation to the next. Studied inheritance of characteristics in pea plants e. g. flower colour pod colour stem length. Genes are dna sequences that code for one or more specific proteins protein. An organism"s genome is the sum total of all of its dna, even though not all of that dna codes for proteins. 2 sets of 23 (one set from each parent) A diploid cell has 2 sets of chromosomes. When sperm and egg unite, there are 46 again. Our somatic cells have 23 pairs of chromosomes. And one pair of sex chromosomes x and y chromosomes. A numbered arrangement or display of all 23 pairs of chromosomes is called the human karyotype. Look identical under the microscope, same length, have the same genes at the same locations. The location of a specific gene on a chromosome is called the gene locus.
