An overview of the diversity and biology of organisms traditionally included in the plant. Kingdom: algae, lichens, mosses, ferns, gymnosperms and flowering plants. Emphasis is on the relationship between structural and functional innovations in plants and how these have influenced their reproduction and evolution in various ecosystems. Test 1=15%, test 2=15 %, lab=30%, final exam=35%, participation=5% Acquire an understanding of the diversity and biology of plants and their interactions with microbes and animals. Gain an appreciation of the legacy and future of research and observation that underpins plant biology. Develop skills that help in the observation and interpretation of plant structure and function. Refine communication skills, especially in the use of terminology, that allow articulate discussion about plants. Examine some of the aspects of human interactions with plants to appreciate better our complete ecological and economic dependence on these organisms.
