Document Summary

Four basic response consequences: positive reinforcement strengthens behaviour, recommended approach for learning, negative reinforcement strengthens behaviour, extinction weakens behaviour, punishment suppresses/weakens behaviour. Punishment: punishment, or consequences, create avoidance of the behaviour reinforced, avoid using physical activity as punishment (running) Use punishment to decrease specific behaviours: ex. Drawbacks: fear of failure when athletes are punished for mistakes, may serve the athlete"s need to receive attention, reinforcing negative behaviour, ex. Intrinsic vs. extrinsic rewards: positive and negative reinforcement leads to repetition of the behaviour being reinforced. Schedule of reinforcement: early stages early, immediate, and often, mastery of behaviour intermittent reinforcement. Reinforce: performance and outcome, effort, social and teamwork skills. Internal motivation pride, self-confidence, joy: proactive self-sustaining source of motivation, short-term and long-term success, optimal type. External motivation reward such as money, trophies, or praise: reactive reacting to a reward or punishment, short-term very powerful, long-term can fizzle out, wide variety.
