HPED 2440 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Selective Perception
Document Summary
The process of change: you can"t develop or improve by staying the same. Why change: almost all of the research papers you read proposed changes or they modeled innovations that were needed in various communities within the recreation sector. This prevents further progress and sometimes leads to collapse. Inability to do the new job: disruption, fear of the unknown, selective perception, threatened. Reactions to change: denial, resistance, exploration, acceptance, commitment. Three phases of change: the ending of the old approach, the neutral zone (when the old has been dismissed, but the new has yet to be implemented, the beginnings of the new approach. How to become more receptive to change: create awareness and understanding, training must be provided, open communication channels, everyone affected must be involved and empowered, creation of a shared vision for change, support (and possibly incentive) provided.
