WOMENST 1A03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Male Privilege, White Privilege, Cisgender
Document Summary
Feminism and women"s studies have challenged our notions of what normative is: gender, sexuality, body makeup, skin colour. These categories we work with run the risk of being defined by difference alone. Koyama: asks us to extend that notion to cis-gender men and women: male privilege: If we acknowledge that women are disadvantaged then we must also acknowledge that men are correspondingly privileged. Challenges to notion of male privilege: men"s achievements are of most significance. Over-representation of men in culture doesn"t correlate to real-world benefits for actual men. Even if men hegemony is institutionalized, we are powerless to change it: male privilege and white privilege are analogous. Systematically confer dominance over others, which is damaging to their humanity. Unearned entitlement = positive advantages we can work to spread, until they are no longer advantages but simply a part of normal social fabric.
