39 views4 pages

Document Summary

In the early 20th century, researchers believed that prejudices were inborn. Children recognized differences and did not like people who were different. Interest in understanding the origins of prejudice and discrimination grew. Researchers refuted the previous theory; prejudice was not inherent or instinctive. It is now believed that racial and religious prejudices are learned by children through observing others. 1940s; new york: researchers noted 3 main points. The children realized whether they were white or visible minority. That the children were aware of the social meaning and evaluation of racial differences. That the children also showed a clear preference for whites and a clear rejection of visible minorities. 3 possible stages of prejudice: racial awareness. Studies with different colour dolls in 1946 revealed that 75% three-year-old black children understood the difference in skin colour. An increasing number of older children made the correct choices and were aware of skin colour.
