Module 8: the price of warped mirrors ** In order to build positive mirrors for children, it"s important for caregivers to clearly understand what expectations they have of children and why (is it for you or the child that you have these expectations?) Researchers point out some things we need to know: We need to understand that as parents, the majority begin this new career without experience. Adults are usually the hardest on the eldest, when the first child comes along everything is done by the book. With the second child, parents become more easygoing. We often borrow standards, when we speak, we hear our parents. Borrowed standards from childhood allow us to act without thinking, experimenting or acting in new ways. This road conserves our time and energy and often short changes the child. The shortcut here may be ineffective and have negative consequences.
